Three Ways to Lower Your Electricity Bills During the Winter

While the winter season is seen by many as being the perfect break from the scorching temperatures that generally accompany the summer season (or if we’re being honest, the rest of the year in New Mexico), it’s also the one time of year where your HVAC system can really begin to suffer once cold temperatures begin to settle in. This is due to the fact that it’s almost constantly working to keep your home’s interior warm and cozy to shield you from the unpleasant cold and wind from the outdoors. However, that warmth doesn’t come without a price, and as a result, this can also mean an increase in your energy bills during the colder months.

Thankfully, there are more than a few different ways in which you can lower your electricity bills in  winter season while ensuring that you don’t have to pile on sweaters, coats, and blankets while you’re trying to watch a movie on the couch or cook a weeknight meal. We want you to be comfortable and not break the bank!

Here are three ways in which you can lower your electricity bills during the winter.

Keep the Warmth Concentrated

First and foremost, rooms that are generally not insulated, such as garages and crawl spaces, typically do not have to be heated. Even if you were to attempt to heat these areas, you would be doing so in vain, as they tend to lose heat quicker due to the fact that they aren’t insulated like the rest of your home. Concentrate more on keeping the areas of your home that you spend a lot of time in, like bedrooms and living areas, as opposed to spaces you don’t spend a lot of time in.

Check the Filters

Take the time to check the air filters in your HVAC unit on a regular basis, to make sure that the unit itself is not only working as efficiently as possible, but to ensure that there is a proper amount of airflow. Poor airflow means poor heating! Additionally, you’ll want to check the size of the air filters and make sure that they’re the correct size for your unit, and if they’re dirty they’ll need replaced.

Free Up Vents

When it comes to air vents in your home, you’ll want to take a walk around and make sure none of them are being blocked by furniture or other household objects! When you’re placing or rearranging furniture it’s easy to get caught up in aesthetics and forget that furniture placement also needs to be functional for your air vents. Take the time to ensure that your vents are cleared of any obstructions, and this will help make sure that warm air will be able to better circulate throughout your home.
